Kopi Luwak Coffee BeansKopi Luwak coffee beans are perhaps the most sought after coffee beans in the world. Partially, this is due to the rarity of these extraordinary coffee beans, but also, this is due to the exceptional cup of coffee that is brewed from Kopi Luwak coffee.

With between 500 and 700 Kilograms produced per year, Kopi Luwak coffee is the rarest coffee, fetching as much as $600 per pound.  This is due to the natural process necessary to produce this bean, a process that you may have heard whispered about as if it were an urban legend. What natural process leads to the world’s most expensive, most  deliciously smooth coffee?

Kopi Luwak, The Civet Cat, and The World’s Best Coffee

Coffee is judged on its character. Is it smooth? Does it have pleasant acidity, a great body? Is the aroma enticing? Kopi Luwak coffee manages to excel most any other coffee bean in all of these categories. The reason for this is not the soil in which the coffee plants are grown, the weather of that region, or even the specific variety of coffee plant that grows Kopi Luwak coffee beans. It is entirely thanks to the Civet Cat.

Civets Make Kopi LuwakThe civet is not actually a cat, though it is often called one and generally resembles one, but is instead a cat-like mammal that lives in regions of Asia and Africa. A specific variety of civet that lives in southern Asia has coffee beans as a staple of its diet. Specifically, it loves to eat coffee cherries at their precise moment of perfect ripeness, bypassing the ones that are not yet perfectly ripe. This makes the civet a specialist in selecting only the most perfect coffee fruits with a better eye than any person has.

Once the civet has eaten the ripe fruits of the coffee plant, it digests them, gaining nourishment from the fleshy fruits but passing the tough seeds that we call coffee beans. In the process, the enzymes found in the civet’s digestive tract transform the coffee beans into something magic: Kopi Luwak coffee beans. The beans are collected from the jungle ground and washed thoroughly before being roasted, ensuring that the beans are clean.

Kopi Luwak coffee has a thick body and a smooth, potent flavor as a result of the transformation of the proteins in the coffee bean caused by the civet’s magic. The amazing aroma and fantastic taste have made this rarest of coffees one of the most desired in the world.

Try this rare coffee bean and let us know if you think it lives up to its reputation.
